Chardonnay, Villa Brici, Slovenia, 2005
5.50

This excellent un-oaked Chardonnay is a real find. It is sourced from the premium white wine growing region of Goriska Brda, an area of low rounded hills in the western part of Slovenia bordering Italy. This is young Chardonnay at its best, with fantastic freshness and fruit concentration. Succulent and ripe with crisp green apple, citrus and grapefruit flavours.

Kristancic, Merlot, Brda, Slovenia, 2004
8.25
Dusan Kristancic’s vineyards are in the Goriska Brda area of Slovenia. In spite of its small size in comparison to other European vineyards, it is Brda’s largest privately owned vineyard. This is because, under Tito it was decreed that all wineries were to be collectivised and only the cooperatives could market wine. Kristancic refused, arguing that the quality of the wine was too great to be mixed with that of his neighbours. Tito himself came to the vineyard to taste the wines. He agreed with Kristacic and the vineyard remained independent. Brda means hills and it is the relatively high altitude of the vineyards which ensures that the hot Mediterranean summer is tempered by cool breezes. This contributes to a Merlot which is ripe and yet restrained. We’re inclined to think that Tito had a good palate.
